COPING STRATEGIES
Stick to the plan.
When you are trying to quit smoking, you may experience withdrawal symptoms such as bad nerves and irritability for a while. This is normal. Remember, tobacco contains nicotine – a very addictive drug. So when you quit, your body will continue to crave for nicotine for about 1 to 2 weeks.
The good news is that you can pull through these 1 to 2 weeks. After that, you’ll definitely feel better. It may be tough in the beginning, but hang in there because the results will be worth it!
Some tips to help you
- Feeling grouchy or nervous? Exercise. Play with your pet. Just stay busy and keep your mind occupied.
- Experiencing headaches or dizzy spells? Take deep breaths and exhale slowly.
- Feeling tired? Take naps. Be sure to get plenty of rest.
- Mouth feels dry and throat is sore? Drink lots of water or fruit juice. Try chewing on sugar-free mints, too.
- Feeling down? Call a friend or someone who understands and talk to them about what you’re going through.
